Welcome:
The goal of these exercises is to become proficient at “translating”complicated notation
into simple, basic notation by paying attention to the beats, attack points and durations
within the measures. The need is to find alternative ways to think about notation, for
example thinking speed versus duration and devising strategies for attacking problems.
Throughout these exercises, which are not ordered sequentially from simple to complex,
there will be a focus on rhythms that look difficult but are easy to perform, rhythms that
look different but sound the same, and rhythms that look alike but sound different.
